Why the Suits?

Mega Career Fair is taking place today in our university. What cannot escape the eye is most of the males dressed up in black suits. It made me wonder whether it is a formal dress code to wear black suits for interviews or is it that wearing a crisp shalwar kameez would make you less competitive. So I looked up on the internet and indeed wearing suits is the business dress code. However what is still bugging me is the problem in wearing cotton Shalwar Kameez? Eventually it is your accomplishments that will qualify you for the job.
